In contrast to the previous example, in this building, the fire was easily able to spread from floor to floor via internal staircases. The original construction had good floor to floor protection, but this had been compromised when converted into a mini-market. Note that the lot to lot fire walls were not compromised and prevented fire spread beyond the mini-market.

At this site in Hong Kong, the original building design had been good, but in the 1970’s and 80’s the outward venting from many of the tenants (textile companies) coated the walls with fibres, providing a fire path from floor to floor. It is a good example of the importance of building design taking into account the possible occupancy and continuing maintenance.

Photograph taken from an insurance adjuster’s office. When a building is under construction, much of the fire protection barriers are yet to be installed and a fire is relatively free to spread. It might be thought that there is nothing to burn at this stage of construction, but a great amount of wood/plastic is used in concrete construction and at some sites the used material is not removed as quickly as it might be.

At this factory in China, there was no impediment to fire development and fire was easily able to spread throughout the whole of this large building from a small, locked room. The factory manufactured computer mice.
